Title: Rendezvous
Artist: Devin K
Director: David Negron
Release Date: Unknown
Genre: Pop
Rendezvous is a song that originally caught my eye by being on the Hollister store playlist, so i imediatly searched him up and found this video. Devin K is a recently new to the scene pop artist, with very catchy and americanised songs. This i believe is his first music video featuring 'Miss Mexico 2009' as the love interest.
Lyrics and visuals
"I know the things she wants to hear, so i whisper them softly in her ear" - at this point in the song they are sitting at a beach on some rocks and they wrapped round each other and he appears to be whispering something in her ear.
"my motto in this type of weather, has always been less clothes the better" - he is undressing her taking off her shirt to reveal a bikini underneath, and he is bear chested wearing swimming shorts.
"we'll even make up our own rules, private space, chillin like we own the place" - you can see that no-one is on the beach with them refecting the lyrics of this is their very own beach and they can do what they like.
"when it's down breeze, when you aren't around me" - he jumps off the rock symbolising he's moving down and away from the love interest to reflect the lyric at this point.
Close-up of artist and stars image motif
There are lots of close-ups of the star singer, and lots of angels from a low angle making him seem superior and the 'alpha male'. Devin K is made to look like a very relaxed and chilled out person in this music video who only has his girl on his mind. He apeals to the female teens because he is seen as being sweet. He also apeals to males as well, because he doesn't only just make music for the female teens, but it sort of has something that makes thr guys like his song. I think that also using a beautiful girl as the love interest has something to do with it. The relationship and the connection he makes with the audience during the close-ups makes the audience his his almost cheeky cocky side. The fact that he goes topless in his music video when he doesnt exactly have the most muscley body shows that he is confident.
Music and visuals
The music and visuals is veyr simple in this music video and probably the most common thing they have done with it is lip-sync which is very important in music videos. I also noticed that as the chorus of the music kicked in the editing paces were mushc faster in the music videoa and there was movement from the two characters on the beach, such as running around and jumping in the water. But as the song got to the bridge just before the main end chorus there was sort of a build up as the editing pace started off slow and gradually built up with the speed of the music. The acting also started off slowly with them sitting down and him singing to her and gradually built up to them running ion the water watching the sunset, kissing etc..
Reference to the notion of looking
They used a very beautiful girl who just so happened to be 'Miss Mexico 2009'. They decided to dress her in denim short shorts to show off her long legs. Also when they undress each other to their swimming suits and bikinis there is close ups on them so the audience can see their well looked after bodies.
Performance, narravtive or concept
This to me is mostly performance as there are lots of close-ups of the actual artist performing. With a tiny bit of loose narrative as it shows a sort of beginning middle and end to their day at the beach, with the sunset at the end to refect the end of the song.
Intertextual refrences
There aren't many intertexual refrence, but the few there are are quite obvious. First of all these two people must be in some sort of relationship but you dont see him/her asking the other out. Also the video dosen't explain why the beach is so empty and how they got there.
Conclusion
This is Devin K's first music video and i think it works really well to sell his personality to the audience and sell his new song out to everyone. I think that he has left his target audience very open which is a wise idea. Overall I really like his song and personality but I think he could have put a bit more into to making the music video look a bit more professional.
