When Making A Music Video..

When making a music video there are lots of things to consider, some of these things can be,whether the music video is going to be driven through the lyrics of the song and the visuals are going to match what the lyrics are saying, if the colour of the video is changed due to the  mood of the song and this is where things such as colour grading comes in or whether its going to be black and white or colour, or whether the music video is going to completely juxtapose it and make it completely opposite from what the songs or the visuals create.



 
The lyrics of a song is so important when it comes to making music videos, because they can help create what is seen on the screen, and help to create a different meaning within the song and connect with the audience. Many lyrics to a song are like the diary of an artist, so if the audience were to listen to the lyrics they could get a deeper undertsanding of the artist and what their life is really about. Some artists also write their own songs such as one of my favourite singer song writers; Taylor Swift. Her lyrics of her songs are events that she has been through and all the troubles she has been through in her life making it easier for the audience to undertstand her. They also have a massive effect on her music videos, and the videos tend to be a narrative based on the lyrics word for word. A good example of the lyrics being important to the song and visuals would be her song: " Love Story" in the lyrics
 

"We were both young when when i first saw you, i close my eyes and the flacsh-back starts im standing there, on a balcony in summer air"

 
 
By these lyrics, Taylor could mean that she fell in love at first sight, or that she was remembering when they first met. The interpretation is purely up the the audience as she leaves it open for them to decide. but the visuals match with the lyrics as it starts with her walking through what appears to be a campus and seeing this guy sitting down. They both look like they have met before and can't remember it. It then switches to what appears to be a flashback of two people very close and crossing hands with each other, and then Taylor in a 'Romeo and Juliet' type gown standing on a balcony singing out to the audience. The fact that she has 'Romemo and Juliet' type clothing suggests that the music video is meant to replicate the Classic Tragedy stage play written by William Shakespeare. The lyrics also go on to say;

"Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter, and my daddy said stay away from Juliet"

 

This music video proves that lyrics are very important when it comes to writing a song and creating a music video. 
 

 

 

 

When making a music video, emotions are alos important as they play a big part into getting the audience to connect with the song emotionally. This includes making the audience feel empathy towards the protagonist in the music video which is often the artist, or in some cases an actor. This makes the audience relate to the character and emotion, and make them feel like their a part of the song. Emotion can also be driven by other things you see in a music video, for instance, if the video is in black and white or colour, the surroundings of the music video and just in general the whole feel of it all. Some artists are succesful enought to create a music video on such an emotional level that audience memeber cannot listen to the song without thinking about the music video. Emotions are very important and what I think is one of the most important things. This is because many people base their views of the song on the music video, and if the music video does not match the song on an emotional level, most people dislike it. Emotions in a song are mostly conveyed through the narrative being sad or happ or even tradgic. A music video that i think does really well in this is Katy Perry's song and music video, 'Thinking Of You'. Whenever i watch this music video, i feel so much empathy for the artist as she takes me through a story that is sad and beautiful at the same time.

 

 



 

 

 

Sound is also an important aspect of music videos as when hearing the sound of the song, the audience will stereotypically picture the visuals. For instance, if you had a slow song such as, 'A Drop In The Ocean' by Ron Pope, you expect to see something that reflects the sound of the song such as slow motion, lots of narrative, and sad looks from the protagonist from the music video. So looking at the complete opposite from that, looking at a song such as 'Juicy' by The Notorious B.I.G you expect to see a rapper rapping to the camera with dancing girls in the backround, drugs, cars, and parties because as the audience you have certain stereotype visuals to certain genres of songs. So when creating a music video the sound is so important because you wouldn't make a music video of people at a party drinking, smoking and cars to a slow song unless the director and producer were trying to creating that effect on purpose.
